St. Maarten – One man, identified as O.D. was arrested for firearm possession last week Friday in the early morning hours during a concerted law enforcement effort whereby five houses and the offices of three companies were searched.

Members of the Detective Collaboration Team RST and the police conducted the searches at 6 a.m. at locations in Pointe Blanche, Cole Bay, and Sucker Garden. The searches were led by the Judge of Instruction and in the presence of a public prosecutor. The French gendarmerie cooperated in this action with a house search  at an unspecified location in Saint Martin.

The searches are part of a criminal investigation code-named Bromelia (a cheerful, low maintenance, exotic houseplant in endless colors and varieties) based on suspicions of laundering of money that was obtained through criminal activities. The action focused on administration. Several items like documents, administration, and data carriers were found and confiscated. Officers furthermore confiscated five cars and a truck.

In August, law enforcement arrested already six suspects during two different actions in Maho and Simpson Bay. Three women and three men – aged between 26 and 37 – were arrested at that time, while officers confiscated weed, cocaine, money and a firearm. After these arrests, the Bromelia-investigation started. Two of the six suspects have in the meantime been released.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office stated in a press release that it will not provide further information because the investigation is ongoing.
