Omar J. in custody for drive by shooting

St. Maarten – Omar J., the brother of murder victim Amador Jones turned himself in to the police last week. He remains in custody pending further investigation of his possible involvement in a drive by shooting that took place in Dutch Quarter on April 20 near the Tan Tan supermarket. “He denies any involvement,” Chief Prosecutor mr. Hans Mos told this newspaper yesterday.

But because the victim, identified by law enforcement as F. from St. Kitts, has made a clear statement to the police claiming that J. shot at him, the suspect remains in custody. “F. told us that he recognized the shooter and that he also knows him,” Mos said. “The victim was very specific in his statement.”

The drive by shooting followed on the heels of the murder of Amador Jones on Saturday April 17 at the Sunrise car wash and snack bar in Cul de Sac opposite the John Cooper/Jose Lake Sr. Ballpark.

The Kittitian was arrested Saturday a week ago as he was leaving the hospital where he had been treated for the gunshot wound to his leg as a possible suspect on the Amador Jones killing. But it soon became apparent that F. does not fit the description of the shooter, and he was handed over to immigration for deportation to St. Kitts.
