Officer involved shooting being investigated by Federal PolicePOSTED: 03/9/15 6:42 PM
St. Maarten – The young police officer involved in the shooting death of a young man in Belvedere on Wednesday night, has been questioned and will be questioned again as the investigation continues. However, although the officer accompanied his colleagues to the police station after the shooting, he has not been arrested at this stage.
The investigation into the shooting in which Akeem Isidora lost his life is being conducted by Landsrecherche (federal/national detectives). As at press time it was uncertain whether the officer had been suspended while the investigation is being conducted, but Tineke Kamps of the public prosecutor’s office said this would be at the discretion of the employer, in this case KPSM.
On Wednesday March 4th at approximately 07.10 p.m. several police patrols, detectives and paramedics were sent to Happy Estate in Belvedere where a shooting had taken place and whereby the victim was lying on the ground not showing any signs of life. On the scene the investigating officers indeed encountered a young man lying in the middle of the street that was not showing any signs of life. Inspector Ricardo Henson said that the information that came into the Police Central Dispatch was that an off-duty police officer was involved in the incident.
“The scene was immediately cordoned off by the investigating officers. According to witnesses the incident happened after a very heated verbal confrontation between the off-duty officer, who was at that time driving in his personal vehicle and a group of men from the neighborhood. At one point during this confrontation the situation escalated and got out of control. This is when according to witnesses shots were fired, leaving one young man dead on the street. The Forensic Department was on the scene collecting evidence while the detectives were gathering information and questioning witnesses.
“The Chief of Police Peter de Witte along with the Public Prosecutor was on the scene. The investigation which is in its preliminary stage and involves a police officer has been immediately handed to the Federal Detectives who will continue this investigation. It’s too early to determine exactly what transpired during this incident. Many rumors are circulating within the community about the incident. The investigation by the Federal Detectives will determine exactly what happened. The Police Department will give the Federal Detectives all the necessary cooperation during the entire investigation.
