St. Maarten – An off-duty police officer was stabbed in the left side of his chest while at “Club High Up” on Welfare Road early Wednesday morning. All police patrols were sent to the night club at approximately 2:45 a.m. in connection with loud music being played at the club. Officers spoke with management and remained on the scene to monitor any developments. Shortly after, two men started to fight and during the commotion, club-goers started running out of the establishment. Simultaneously, an off-duty police officer approached his fellow officers on the scene, telling them that he had been stabbed by a man in the club. The injured officer pointed out his attacker, who, at the time, was seen running out of the club.

The 32 year-old suspect was chased on foot by police officers and was arrested in the vicinity of Carousel. He was still in possession of the knife, which was confiscated for further investigation, when the officers apprehended him. The injured officer was treated on the scene by paramedics and then transported to St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) for further treatment, where he remained for observation. The suspect, with initials C.A.I. (32), was taken to the Philipsburg Police Station, where he remains in custody for further investigation.
