Obama stays in the White House

WASHINGTON –   At 12.15 a.m. the Huffington Post called the presidential race in favor of incumbent President Barack Obama.

The site gave Obama around midnight California Washington and Oregon, even though the vote counting there still had to begin, and it called battleground state Ohio with a 2 percent margin for Obama as well. This gave the president 275 electoral votes, 5 more than he needed to stay ahead of Mitt Romney.

Throughout the evening Obama also remained ahead in Florida, though when 92 percent of the vote was counted, the margin had shrunk to just 0.2 percent and it was therefore too close to call.

Throughout the evening as results came in Romney held a lead over Obama of close to 1.5 million in the popular vote.

National exit polls published by CNN showed that male voters favored Romney with 52 percent over Obama, while 55 percent of women favored the president. Obama is also the favorite among voters up to 45 years of age. Older voters favor Romney. In urban environments voters favored Obama by 62 percent, while in rural areas Romney was favored by 58 percent.
