The last passenger from the Suzuki Van is rushed to a waiting ambulance after he was extracted from his vehicle.

St. Maarten – The ‘Jaws of Life’ had to be used to extract the driver whose car collided head on with a vehicle that was travelling in the opposite direction on Welgelegen Road during the rush hour traffic yesterday afternoon.

According to Police Spokesman, Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson, the police dispatch received a call shortly around 5 p.m. that there was a serious accident involving two vehicles. At the time of the accident, 4 persons were travelling in the car and 5 in the van.

“Seven of the persons including one female who were injured were taken away to the St Maarten Medical Center, but it took some time to extract the driver of the car,” Henson said.

Because of the nature of the accident which involved a Kia Rio and a Suzuki Mini Van, the members of the Fire Department who were quick to get to the scene had to use the jaws of life to extract the driver of the Picanto.

While the cause of the accident could not be ascertained, according to Henson, it would appear as if the car which was proceeding towards Little Bay was in the process of overtaking another vehicle when it came into contact with the van head on. Within the next few days, the police are expected to conduct a series of investigations which led to the cause of the accident.
