Foundation organizes raffle in March to fund project

St. Maarten – The SXM women’s shelter project intends to raise $90,000 in March through a raffle to fund the first phase of a state of the art community service women’s shelter project at Marigot Hill Road. Theophilus Priest, who has been operating a shelter on his private property for years, told this newspaper that he wants to professionalize assistance for abused women.

“I thought about closing down my shelter,” he said, “because it was becoming too dangerous.”

That danger would be coming from abusers who at times assault the shelter in an attempt to either vent their frustration over a broken relationship or to simply demand that their better halves return home.

“This will be a project with professional staff,” Priest said. He intends to build one hundred low income dwellings on a piece of land situated at Marigot Hill Road. The dwellings will be managed by the non-profit organization Mujeres Adelante (Women Forward).

Priest has been working on the idea together with Paola Adriana Bolanos-Diaz who acts as the vice president of the Foundation SXM Women Shelter Committee Mujeres Adelante.

Sales of the 6,000 raffle tickets will begin early next month, and the draw is scheduled to take place on March 30.
