New telecom provider on the horizon

St. Maarten – Local entrepreneur Elwaldo Arrindell announced yesterday that he intends to launch his mobile telecom service in St. Maarten towards the end of this year. He obtained a license in August of last year from former Minister of Telecommunication Romeo Pantophlet.
Arrindell has been working in the TV business for over 30 years and he has been after a telecommunications license since 1997.
“Having more competition in the market will in the end benefit the consumer” he stated in a press release. “This is due to the expected price decrease for mobile services and the increase in quality of service due to competition.”

Arrindell did not yet announce a name for the company but he told this newspaper that he expects to employ between 35 and 50 people – all local professionals.
That Arrindell obtained a mobile license at all is remarkable, given the fact that Corporate Innovations has been fighting for such a license for years. In September 2011 the company went to court, after the Island Council failed to react to an appeal against its decision to refuse the license. The current status of the corporate innovations license is unclear.
