National Institute for Professional Advancement (N.I.P.A.) Officially opened

St. Maarten – The campus of the National Institute for Professional Advancement (NIPA) was officially opened by Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams yesterday with the unveiling of the plaque of the school. In her address to the gathering, which included members of the board and dignitaries who attended the ceremonies, she said that there are many people that they should be thanking for their input in the development of the institution. She noted that even though it has been a long time for St. Maarten and stated that NIPA is an accomplishment on its own.

She stated that they have overcome many obstacles as they strive to reach this level which is building the Vocational Education on St. Maarten. She noted that the school is on the right path and the opening will make a difference and not everyone on the island understands the philosophy behind NIPA and called on the audience to take the message forward since the institution should be a place for lifelong learning.

The mission statement for the institution is to provide higher education opportunities that will prepare all to succeed in a dynamic global economy with the goal to provide quality vocational technical education for all that is widely recognized, said Director of NIPA Vernon Richards. The institution offers courses such as Hospitality level 1, Cooks at level 1, Maritime assistant level 1, ITC service assistant level 2, License Practical Nursing where they will be graduating in 2015 are among the courses offered by the institution.

The school boasts of having 188 students attending the school along with the adults which when tallied is nearly 300 students who are attending the institution. The classes are divided in morning and evening and “at no one time that one will find 300 students at the campus on any given day,” said Richards. He mentioned that even though the Netherlands is busy with the football in Brazil where they scored 5 goals to one, thrashing Spain, they have taken the time out to attend the opening of NIPA.

He called on the audience to be acquainted with NIPA, a milestone for the island and a bench mark for St. Maarten. He mentioned that there are a number of institutions that are involved in NIPA and noted that without the board of directors they would not be able to move in the direction that they are presently moving, he said.
