WILLEMSTAD —For the first time in 33 years, the parents of brutally murdered Darley Lai in 1979 spoke in court during the appeal case of James Murray. During five painful minutes the mother explained to the judges how the murder affected and is still affecting her life and the life of her three daughters, born after 1979. “Whatever the outcome, I will respect it, but if Murray is released I will never be at peace again”, she told the press after leaving court around 7 p.m. last night. She pleaded with all mothers to take good care of their children. The father wanted James to look at them during the case, which he refused.
Darley Lai was assaulted and murdered on May 23, 1979 by James Murray. He was convicted to life in prison. However, a new criminal code was introduced on November 15, 2011, which stipulates that a person sentenced to life can appeal for conditional freedom after serving 20 years. The court will announce its ruling on September 21.
