St. Maarten – An apparent murder-suicide at the A.T. Illidge Road took the lives of 52-year old Cheryl Withrite and her husband, 54-year old Cleon Bourne on Sunday morning shortly after eight o’clock. The tragic event shocked the neighborhood and colleagues of the murdered woman.

The circumstances of the case are unclear and it was not evident yesterday whether Bourne had stabbed or shot his wife.

Police inspector Ricardo Henson said that the couple had possibly been fighting. “When officers arrived they heard a strange sound at the back of the building. There they found a man who was bleeding from wounds to his stomach and his throat.”

Bourne apparently jumped out of a window of the apartment opposite the Flourish supermarket after killing Withrite, who was a manager at Burger king on Bush Road. Bourne died an hour later of his injuries in the St. Maarten Medical Center.  Police confiscated the body for further investigation.

Inspector Henson said that the detective department and the forensic department are working the case. “They are busy piecing together what happened,” he said.

Chief prosecutor Mr. Hans Mos said yesterday that a criminal investigation is underway and that possibly today towards the end of the day there will be some clarity about what actually happened.

This was the second murder for the year 2012; the first murder victim was Jamal Samuel who was shot by one of his brothers on February 12.
