MPs accuse gas stations of thieving

St. Maarten – Parliamentarians Frans Richardson and Louie Laveist severely criticized the business practices of local gas stations that charge dollar-paying customers far below the exchange rate for the guilder.
“All SOL gas stations are doing this,” Richardson said during yesterday’s central committee meeting. “They are devaluing the value of the dollar. They are cheating. The thieving is going on with the guilder-dollar exchange rates.”
Laveist concurred and said that some stations value the dollar at just 1.75 guilder, while for instance all supermarkets have the value pegged at 1.80. “My anger is with these robbers. It is a rip off,” Laveist said. “We need to put in place legislation to stop this rip off.”
