St. Maarten – “Come on up and carry your own key” was the challenge issued to all those who attended the Aging With Grace (AWG) foundation’s Mother’s Day karaoke festival.

The event was held at the Port-de-Plaisance rotunda on Sunday and was well supported by the elderly, their families and caregivers.  It was opened by Wally Havertong with a soulful rendition of Perfumes de Gardenas. He made way for the likes of Cedric Rey, Josianne Flemming, Sinclair Barry and Theophilus van Rossum. Songs were sung in English, Spanish and Papiamentu.  Crowd favorites included Endlessly, Mama, The Strength of a Woman and Thank God for a Mother like Mine.

The oldest mother present at the celebration was Olga Racamy, a ninety two year old who received a floral bouquet. Apart from the honor that was bestowed on her, special door prizes were also given away. These included gift certificates, full body massage and spa treatment, jewelry, dinner for two, free hotel room stays and even homemade cakes.

This is the third time that AWG has hosted a karaoke affair.  President of AWG, Daniella Jeffrey said that the foundation chose to celebrate motherhood because, “Mothers are not only the backbone of our society but are also the pillars of our society.”

Under iridescent lights and a décor sprinkled with pink and yellow balloons, streamers and flowers, Dame Ruby Bute recited a poem called “My Special Mother.”

As many people paid tribute to their mothers and foster mothers in song and words of wisdom, a few persons in the audience began to shed tears for their mothers who were deceased. However the atmosphere still exuded warmth and remained festive.

The event was described as a success with all those in attendance walking away with pleasant memories and thoughtful souvenirs.
