St. Maarten—Monthly Sunday Jazz sessions are carded to begin this Sunday on the boardwalk in Philipsburg as part of efforts to revive nightlife in the area and as a means of building momentum for what is hoped will lead to an annual jazz festival on St. Maarten.

The Jazz sessions are being organized by the Down Street council and will feature a number of local acts as well as the talents of other jazz artists from the neighboring islands.  “The boardwalk Jazz Festival will be a monthly festival held every last Sunday of the month and will focus on highlighting the Jazz Music culture from a local and international perspective. It will focus on increasing our local and tourism product on the boardwalk in the Philipsburg Down Street area. The monthly Jazz festival will open a platform where locals and tourist can gather to experience the culture and transition of local and international jazz musicians,” the Down Street association states in a promotional flyer.

The festivities are carded to begin from five pm to midnight and the two main bands for this first jazz session are Koolberry Jam and SXM Jazz project featuring jazz singer Essence. The Down Street Council invites persons to patronize this first jazz session and show their support for local talent.
