Minister Pantophlet expresses concerns: Low productivity at Economic Affairs

St. Maarten – Gross inefficiency at the Economic Affairs Department has resulted in Minister Romeo Pantophlet hiring external personnel to accelerate the distribution of business licenses and strengthen the division.

Yesterday he indicated that a number of temporary employees were hired recently to eliminate the backlog of more than 720 business licenses.

He also signed an advice to hire three more temps, last month, to complete the final 100 business licenses that were still to be issued. This followed the signing of an agreement to hire someone in a senior position to oversee the process.

“It is my understanding that the department is plagued by absenteeism, so-called sickness; in one word low, low productivity. So we will be putting someone in place to revamp and restructure that department and bring it up to par as far as efficiency is concerned.”

Pantophlet added that because he is dissatisfied with the way things are being done at the Inspection and Price Control division of the ministry, he is also considering implementing similar measures.

“There have not been price controls taking place and we instructed that a report be made up and that that process should actually begin within short,” Pantophlet said.
