St. Maarten News – Crime is down, Justice Minister Edson Kirindongo said on the second day of the budget debate in parliament yesterday. Only murders and attempted murders went up 35 percent between 2010 and 2015.
Home burglaries decreased by 104 percent, robberies by 63, theft by 23, assault with a weapon by 59 percent. Car accidents are also down, the minister said: 26 percent.
“The police lack manpower but St. Maarten has the reputation of being one of the safest islands in the Caribbean,” the minister said. “I believe that laws have to be stricter so that punishments fit the crime. Declaring war on crime is not only a matter for the police, they cannot do it alone. Every citizen should be committed to this.”
The minister confirmed to MP Franklin Meyers that Bavpol officers indeed have to leave their service weapon at the station after their shift. “This is because they have not finished their police training,” he said.
