Mild sentence for firearm possession

St. Maarten – The first trial stemming from the Bada Bing bribery-investigation played out in court on Tuesday, though the defendant has nothing to do with payment of kickbacks by strip club owner Jaap van den Heuvel to Independent parliamentarian Patrick Illidge.

When the story about the video footage featuring Van den Heuvel and Illidge broke on March 8, law enforcement raided an apartment complex on Mountain Dove Road in Pointe Blanche owned by Illidge, his office at the parliament building and Bada Bing. In one apartment, rented to Maximo Ramon Mella Slujalkousky, officers found a loaded gun.

Mella Slujalkousky, a 29-year old businessman who arrived in St. Maarten in 2010 and owns a shipping company, was arrested and spent 34 days in detention.

The court sentenced him to 394 days imprisonment for firearm possession. Of the sentence 360 days are suspended, so the defendant does not have to go back to jail.
