St. Maarten – Gregory van Gurp, aka The Mighty Greg and as Snoopy the bus driver passed away this weekend at his home on Cannegieter Street. His body was found yesterday morning around eight o’clock. The bus-driving calypsonian had been in bad health for some time already.
He was seen alive for the last time on Friday around five o’clock, eyewitnesses and a sister of the calypsonian confirmed. In 2008, the Mighty Greg won the Road March King title during St. Maarten’s Carnival celebrations.
The forensics department and detectives of the Royal Marechaussee were on the scene yesterday morning. Though there was no official report yet yesterday afternoon, there are no indications that Van Gurp was the victim of a crime.
The St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF) extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and fans of The Mighty Greg aka ‘Snoopy’ on Monday.
“May his artistry live on in others and may he forever be remembered as the GREAT Carnival stalwart that he was. Carnival on St. Maarten has lost a terrific artist with a unique voice, a voice we will all remember. He will definitely be missed, but forever loved. Sing on Snoopy, sing on,” the release stated.
