St. Maarten – Isidore “Mighty Dow” York was presented with his “Man of the Year Award” from the Tallahassee-St. Maarten Foundation (THL-SXM) on Saturday evening by Culture Minister Rhoda Arrindell on Saturday evening at the Cheri’s Café. The award was presented for York’s contribution to the island’s culture by writing and singing songs like “St. Maarten Rumba” and “Christmas morning” and his work teaching steel pan to the island’s youth.
Arrindell hailed York for doing “pioneering work with the youth of the community by teaching them steel pan and history of pan.”
The Past President of the St. Maarten Promotional Committee Bernard Hunt also took the chance to present York an award for his work here and abroad as a calypsonian, entertainer and cultural ambassador.
“All efforts will be made to support Dow just as he has supported the people of the island,” Hunt said.
Dow was grateful to receive the awards and pledged to continue his work. He also called on the nation’s youth “to continue their good works and remain focused on the positives.”
Arrindell also used the event to give support for a planned visit to Tallahassee by York, his father and brother that is being organized by Lugisse’s foundation.
“Our steel pan talent needs to be part of our culture and export with our sister city Tallahassee in the form of an exchange program,” Lugisse said.
After accepting the award York entertained the crowd with steel pan music.
