St. Maarten -Nagico and Travel Rent a Car are two of the companies that have made donations towards the computer lab for kids envisioned by the Middle Region and Defiance Community councils and towards their attempts to assist the Dow foundation with their trip to the U.S.
The Council held a fund raising “cook out” and fun day on Sunday that featured music from the Dow Foundation, a street jump up with Sound 2000 and XP band and various other forms of entertainment. President of the Council Angelicia Chittick said that the council was pleased with Sunday’s turnout and heartened by the number of persons that showed up to support their local community.
The Public Works Department was among departments that assisted with the vent by providing barricades to close off the road to allow for the street jump up and James Richardson made his contribution to the event by providing a trailer truck to be used by the band free of charge. Chittick said the XP band also contributed to the event by playing at no cost save the cost of its two band members that had to be flown in from Saba.
The community council is primarily aiming to secure enough funds to provide a community center for kids of that community and Sunday’s fund raiser is said to be the first of several that will be held until the goal is achieved. Chittick believes that the computer lab is necessary to assist the kids with school since many of these kids do not have computers. She believes it can also be used to assist adults in the community.
Sunday’s event was well attended and Chittick extended thanks to all the persons who contributed to making the event a success including the vendors at the cook out and the persons who patronized the event. She explained that the fund raising efforts continues and said the council is still hoping to receive assistance from more civic minded businesses.
