St. Maarten – Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transportation and Telecommunications Franklin Meyers has thanked the people of St. Maarten for their outpouring of support at the passing of his mother Eulalie Meyers who he called, “the family’s rock.” He delivered the message at Wednesday’s Council of Ministers press briefing.

The minister shared that his mother was very often the glue that held the family together and served as intermediary when there were arguments.

“Mom could always be counted upon to listen and then say what needed to be said and/or to say a prayer. When that prayer was finished we knew that things would be ok again,” Meyers recalled.

He went on to call the outpouring at his mom’s passing “amazing.”

“She lived a simple life; A life of God. And to see today how many lives she touched is amazing. I want to thank everyone, on the family’s behalf, for their outpouring of love and support,” Meyers said.

Earlier in the press briefing Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams personally conveyed her condolences and that of the Council of Ministers to Meyers and his family. The Democratic Party’s faction leader in Parliament Roy Marlin also took the time during a central committee meeting to express his and the faction’s condolences on the death of a woman he called “national stalwart.”

“I have been able to know Mrs. Eulalie (Meyers-Hazel) personally and she will definitely be missed,” Marlin said.

Later in the day Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport Rhoda Arrindell also publicly extended her condolences to the Meyers and Hazel families.

“She was a mother to many, whose lives she touched. Her work in the community was exemplary. She was a woman of great faith and a tower of strength and a tireless crusader for women’s and children’s rights,” Arrindell said in tribute.
