St. Maarten – Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication Franklin Meyers has endorsed the candidacy of Chief Executive Officer of the St. Maarten Harbor Group of Companies Mark Mingo in board elections for the St. Maarten Marine Trade Association (SMMTA).

“Mingo has shown that he is a professional who is not afraid to say things as he sees it. He has proven this by immediately looking into the crime situation around the lagoon and meeting with maritime stakeholders about their concerns. Simply but, Mark makes no apologies when it comes to working for St. Maarten and the marine industry whether it be cruise ships, mega-yachts or dingies,” Meyers said.

The minister believes it is vital that the Harbor Group has representation in the board so there is cohesion between policy and the industry.

“The marine sector is important to the overall economic development of the country and so I am calling on association members to consider him for the board,” Meyers said Monday.

“The fragility of the marine sector could not be underscored more nor can a more perfect example of how it can be impacted by policy than the introduction of high bridge and other fees over three years ago via Simpson Bay Lagoon Authority Corporation (SLAC). Now that SLAC is under the Harbor Group of Companies, a more active role in the industry is warranted. The Harbor Group on the board will serve to move the marine industry further by ensuring issues are addressed and measures are conducive to growth,” Meyers added.

As an example Meyers said a representative of the Harbor Group in the board will help ongoing discussions, initiated by the Harbor Group, on lowering bridge fees. That fall off in prices will serve as enticement for captains and yacht owners to return.

“We cannot afford to lose any business and we cannot afford not to work together and strengthen already strong relationships. I see Mingo’s candidacy for the SMMTA board as a step to better relationships with the marine sector and a catalyst for tremendous stable growth for the industry,” Meyers said.
