St. Maarten – Carnival 2012 was officially opened by the Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs and Transportation Franklin Meyers at the Festival Village on Thursday evening. In his brief statement he called on the people that gathered at the Festival Village to make the 43rd Carnival Celebrations a safe one “since it is party time.”

The minister cautioned that this carnival should be a safe one and if drinking, one should do it in moderation so as to make this carnival the best one ever making it the best carnival celebrations ever in the Eastern Caribbean.

Also present at the festivities were the representatives of the French Carnival Committee for the first time in the history of Carnival. The president of that organization said that he was proud to be here with the Dutch side Carnival Committee and noted that even though it is a celebration, it is not easy to prepare for the festivities some eight months in advance.

“If you are going to come with violence for the celebrations, please stay home and not take part in the carnival.”

He wished the St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation the best for Carnival 2012 and noted that without the two leaders of the island there will be no carnival. He made a call for the people to support all the local shows since there has been a trend in the past to support more of the international shows.

President of the St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation Stuart Johnson highlighted the upcoming shows which includes the Teen and the Mature queen pageants which will be held on April 25. He called on the population to come out and support the shows which was described as the best pageants.

All contestants were given the opportunity to come out on the stage and wave to their supporters who were gathered in the Festival Village including reigning Miss St. Maarten Trumane Trotman. She was described as a “true ambassador” for St. Maarten since she continues to make the island proud.

The screams and shouts for the different contestants gave the 43rd Carnival celebrations “an air of festivity.” The reigning Carnival Queen for French St. Maarten was given the opportunity to grace the stage and was greeted with shouts and screams from an excited crowd that had gathered in the Festival Village.

The volunteers of the SCDF were lauded for their efforts by the president of the foundation for their hard work which made it possible for the foundation to have the event.

Among the events that are slated for Carnival 2012 will be a Youth extravaganza, Junior Carnival parade and three International shows. Carnival 2012 which started on March 31 is expected to be concluded on May 2.
