Member of Parliament Silvio Matser trial to March 2016POSTED: 10/9/15 2:16 PM
St. Maarten – The Common Court of Justice moved the appeal trial of MP Silvio Matser deep into next year. On Wednesday March 2, at 1.30 p.m. the embattled politicians will fight his conviction to 24 months of imprisonment (with 18 months suspended), 240 hours of community service and 3 years of probation. His defunct construction company Energizer is contesting a 4.5 million guilders fine for fiscal fraud.
Yesterday Matser’s attorney Cor Merx asked the court to hear several witnesses. Among them is the director of a French side company called Noframar, the project leader of the Cupecoy Village project, and a previous tax inspector .Maria Bas.
The court ruled that the requests to hear these witnesses were insufficiently concretely motivated and sent the case with an open reference back to the Judge of Instruction. There, the defense will get the opportunity to motivate why it wants to hear particular witnesses.
