Marlin urges Arrindell to formally send draft amendment to Advisory Council

“I don’t play games. I play politics”

St. Maarten – Leader of the opposition National Alliance faction William Marlin has “advised” President of Parliament Gracita Arrindell “to please submit the draft ordinance amending the Civil Code through the proper channels to the Deputy Chair of the Council of Advice.” He also called Arrindell’s July 18 statement that the draft law had been sent to the Council of Advice “absolutely not true” even though he did not provide documented proof.

“As long as the draft is not submitted in the correct way the Council of Advice will not handle the draft law. The Secretary General has informed me that he is willing to informally send the amendment to the Council of Advice, but they can only formally begin the handling once they get a letter from the President of Parliament for them to officially handle the law and so the responsibility lies squarely in the hands of the chairlady,” Marlin said.

The opposition leader has also said his faction won’t be blamed for the draft amendment being sent to the Central Committee even though that violates subsection 3 of Article 85 of the Constitution. That section states, “The Parliament shall offer a draft of a national ordinance to the Council of Advice before proceeding to consider it.”

Arrindell argues that all 14 Members of Parliament who were present at the June 29 budget meeting approved sending the document to the Central Committee and thus share in the culpability. She’s also said that hiccoughs like these can be expected in the life of a young parliament. Marlin does not agree and lays all blame for what’s happened on Arrindell and the two Deputy Chairs – Petrus Leroy de Weever and Patrick Illidge.

“There is only one proper procedure and to state that things like this could happen because we are a young country and parliament is a flimsy excuse in which the President of Parliament is trying to project her mistake onto everybody else. Basic procedures are being trampled on and I did not make any mistake,” Marlin said.
