GREAT BAY – Starting today St. Maarten will be the backdrop for the annual hurricane exercise Hurex. One hundred marines arrive this afternoon on the island. They will take part in a hurricane relief exercise together with the local emergency services.
Towards midnight the first scenario will play out on Front Street where marine riot control squads will practice their skills in calming down an angry crowd.

On Thursday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. several scenarios will play out in Mullet Bay. The focus is here on assistance after the passage of a hurricane. These exercises will be done in close cooperation with among others the fire department and the Red Cross.
Hurex is an annual exercise for the marines. After St. Maarten the marines will also visit Statia and Saba to deal with a simulated plane crash and evacuation of citizens.
