St. Maarten – Charlene Craig, the girlfriend of former Immigration head Marcel Loor is at a loss for words after she learned through internet-reports that her partner had been arrested in Paris on Thursday morning. Solicitor-General Taco Stein confirmed yesterday afternoon that French side colleagues had confirmed the arrest to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Loor left Wednesday for Paris on a business trip and he was apparently arrested upon arrival. Craig dismissed reports that Loor had traveled with a kilo of cocaine to Europe. “We don’t do that kind of thing,” she said.

This newspaper went with Craig to the Gendarmerie in Spring – a district of Marigot – in an attempt to obtain information about the situation.
A spokesman for the gendarmerie was however unable to provide any details. Craig said that she had not had any contact with Loor. According to the gendarmerie phones could be confiscated in the course of an investigation for scrutiny. In that case, the spokesman said, the phones will not be answered when somebody calls the number.

The gendarmerie-spokesman said that it is standard procedure to give people after their arrest access to a doctor and to give them an opportunity to make a phone call to family to inform them about their situation.
Craig said that she had not received any phone calls from Loor and that attempts to contact him had failed.
Solicitor-General Stein said that under certain conditions a detainee is not allowed to have any contact at all with the outside world in the interest of an investigation.
In the first phase after an arrest, detainees can be held for four days under French law. If Loor was arrested on Thursday morning after the arrival of the Air France flight, this term ends on Sunday evening.
