Unites States represents quarters of all protesters

St. Maarten – The online petition against legalizing cock fighting in St. Maarten surpassed 3,000 signatures yesterday afternoon, far surpassing the original goal of one thousand supporters for the ban. The organizers have now set their sights on a total of 5,000 signatures.
Local politicians have dismissed the criticism of their decision to allow organized cock fights, saying that this is a tradition that goes back generations and that they will not have these traditions taken away from them under pressure of criticism by foreigners.

The Today newspaper analyzed a solid sample of the more than 3,000 signatures and found that a large part of the objections against cock fighting comes from people who live in the single most important source market for the islands tourism industry – the United States of America.
In the examined sample of 1,024 signatures – the first 500 and the last 524 – American signatories represent 25.6 percent of the total. Another 12 percent of the signatures are from people living in the United Kingdom.
It is not possible to define exactly how many citizens of St. Maarten signed the petition because the petition site does not have St. Maarten listed as a country. Signatures from our island fall therefore in the category Netherlands Antilles. It takes the third place in the ranking of most signatures, with 7.9 percent, closely followed by Germany with 7.3 percent. The Netherlands rounds off the top five with 4.7 percent. Signatories from the following countries complete the top ten: Canada (4.3 percent), Australia (3.7 percent), Italy (3.5 percent), France (2.7 percent) and Poland (2.4 percent). The rest of the signatures come from protesters living in 62 different countries – from India and Pakistan, to Israel, Korea and Iran. But there are also citizens in places closer to home that signed the petition, for instance from Puerto Rico, Saint Lucia and Guadeloupe.

When the petition drive went online, Americans were the most active participant. Data from the last 500 signatures-sample show that Americans have slowed down somewhat, but that Britons, Germans, Canadians and Italians have picked up the pace.
