St. Maarten – Ramesh Manek was installed as President of the Rotary Club Mid-Isle for 2011 – 2012 Rotary year last Friday in a change of board ceremony at Le Moulin Fou at Porto Cupecoy. He was also named Rotarian of the Year by the club’s president for 2010 – 2011 Rotary Year Louis Wever.

“From the moment he became a Rotarian, displayed distinguished service, loyalty and devotion to the ideals of Rotary,” a release from the service club stated.

Manek has chosen to focus on family life during his presidency. He’s also asked that club members follow the 2011 – 2012 international theme and “Reach within to embrace Humanity”.

“Family is the building block of our community and if we want a happy, healthy and crime-free St. Maarten, we need to make sure that our families are happy, healthy and safe,” Manek said.

Other members of the board for the 2011 – 2012 Rotary year are Vice-President Louis Wever, Secretary Jon Hart, Treasurer Tony da Cunha, Club Service Director Linden Powell, Vocational Service Director Millicent de Weever, Community Service Director Sanjay Surtani, International Service Director Russell Bell and Sergeant-at-Arms David Antrobus.

In his farewell Wever thanked members for their support during his term and presented the other board members with plaques of recognition. Wever credited his board with organizing many fellowship evenings, a karaoke night, a table tennis tournament for the youth, the Heart for Haiti fundraiser and having many interesting guest speakers at the weekly club meetings. Wever also chaired the inter-club committee that organized last November’s Musical Magic concert.

Le Charolais Restaurant was given a special award for being the host restaurant for the club’s weekly meetings and Fred van der Peijl was presented with the Rotarian of the Island award for regularly visiting other clubs and supporting their projects.

The change of board ceremony also included a silent auction. The money raised will be donated to Japan’s Earthquake/Tsunami Relief through the Rotary Foundation. Other Rotarians at the ceremony were Past District Governor Dr. Victor Gibbs, Assistant District Governor Jim Ferris, President of Rotary Club of St. Maarten Rebecca Lowe, President of Rotary St. Martin Nord Josianne Fleming-Artsen, President of Rotary St. Martin Sunrise Hendrik-Jan van Ieperen, President of Rotaract St. Martin Sunrise Janice Wever and President of Interact Club of St. Dominic High School Melissa Ramessar. Chocolate Watts provided the musical entertainment.
