Man shot in his face during robbery at night

St. Maarten – Ten minutes before Today arrived on the scene; residents of lower Back Street had remained in their homes, gripped in fear. The sound of repeated gunshots at approximately 12:50 am had echoed through the night. It paralyzed residents and the few patrons of a Spanish bar at the junction of Back and Manzanilla Streets. An armed robbery had taken place and among its witnesses were children.
By the time the police arrived on the scene, concerned residents pointed out a long blood trail leading from Back Street to Longwall Road near Suki Supermarket.
A release issued by the police late Friday afternoon indicated that a man had been shot in the face during a robbery.
The shooting incident took place near the address Back street 183, the police report stated. When police arrived on the scene, the victim had already been taken to the St. Maarten Medical Center.
According to a witness the victim had just left a bar in the neighborhood on his way home. Shortly afterwards the witness saw the victim being chased through the alley leading to the bar by an unknown person. Shots were fired and the witness saw the victim lying on the ground in Back Street bleeding from a wound to one of his eyes. The suspect had already fled the scene.
At the hospital the victim stated that he was attacked by an unknown man who pulled a gun. The victim resisted and tried to run away, but he was chased by the suspect and shot in his face. He was then robbed of his gold necklace.
The wound to the victim’s face is quite serious, the police report stated, and he is admitted to the hospital for further treatment and observation. The forensic department and detective department are investigating the shooting.
The two mobile units that responded to the scene took several hours searching for spent shells. None were reportedly recovered. Still in shock residents refused to return to bed and many of them could be heard commenting that the police should increase its presence in the area since violent incidents occur there frequently.
