Police call for end to “senseless violence”

St. Maarten – An argument over money with a man from the Dominican Republic has landed a Jamaican man in hospital with a gunshot wound to the stomach. It has also prompted Police Spokesman Ricardo Henson to yet again call on residents to find peaceful ways to resolve their differences.

Wednesday’s shooting took place at around 1:00 p.m. The victim and suspect had reportedly had a row earlier in the day. The suspect left the scene – a worksite on the Bush road near Beds and Beyond – and returned with friends to resume the quarrel. When the pair could not reach a solution the suspect shot the man and then fled the scene with two other people in a “brown colored car”. Officers from both the Detective Department and the Forensics Department combed the scene asking questions and looking for clues to piece together what happened. While they did this the victim was treated by paramedics and then taken to the St. Maarten Medical Center for treatment.

After detailing the incident using the available information Henson called for people to stop the senseless violence and to be mature in resolving their conflicts.

“We must all be mature enough to not use violence because doing so sets a very bad example for our children and creates a bad image of our island. These incidents harm us all and if this continues our way of life will cease to exist,” Henson said.
