St. Maarten – The information session for the Caribbean Living Statues Festival held last Saturday at Motiance dance school was a success. “So far, I am happy with the outcome. There were most youngsters, and they showed a lot of interest in the event,” Loekie Morales, president of the Beyond Writing Foundation stated in a press release issued yesterday. The foundation is busy organizing the second Living Statues Festival in Philipsburg in December.

A panel of professionals in the fields of arts and culture will judge the living statues. The eventual winner will collect $500 plus the Grand Prix d’Philipsburg award. In each of the four categories, an honorable indication award and $2509 in prize money will be awarded to the winner.

The jury will look at content, craftmanship, aesthetics, and entertainment value of the participants. In the content category, jurors will look at the concept, what the artist wants to convey, the message or the story and the effect the statue produces. Craftsmanship is about the statue’s quality: the use of color and material, texture, shapes, and make up. The aesthetics category is about sheer beauty and overwhelming impression. The entertainment category speaks for itself. Visitors to the festival will be able to vote for the audience award.

“The championship is not meant for commercial, religious or political manifestations; disqualification is possible,” Morales stated.

“‘We still have space for young and old who are in a good health and shape to become a living statue. With a full training of 2.5 hours during from December 3 to 7, participants can become a living statue, depicting Caribbean or regional icons in the fields of performance arts, music and fashion industry, politics, literature and sports, daily life of the Caribbean or fantasy.

Subscription is possible until October 22. Students who subscribe via their schools are participating free of charge. Adults 18 years and older from outside the schools will pay $100 for the workshop and participation to the festivities/activities, including exhibition as statue on December, 8 and 9 in Philipsburg.
