GREAT BAY-Last Saturday the St. Maarten Lions Club made what it called “a very valuable donation for a good cause,” when its president Lion Richard Boyd presented a cheque for $722 to Felicita Williams. Williams is the author of the book Because of Prayer. The cheque that she received is for the purchase of 40 books which the Lions will present to the various schools on the island.

Public relations officer Lion Wally Havertong said that his service organization believes that the book “can be very useful in difficult situations surrounding the youths.”

The autobiographical piece was published by House of Nehesi Publishers in 2010.

“The life of a happy, playful child is suddenly turned upside-down when it is discovered that her kidneys are “not working.” Her parents are told that she will not survive. A minister appears at her hospital bed to say a final prayer. How did it all turn around? Because of Prayer by Felecita T. Williams is a diary-style story of bio snapshots linked by tremendous pain, family sacrifice and love, and the enduring faith of a life still in progress,” a summary of the work states.

Williams, affectionately known as “Cita” was born in Philipsburg, attended the St. Joseph and Sister Magda schools, before heading to Milton Peters College.

She completed office administration courses in the Netherlands and currently works in St. Martin.

“I look forward for meeting the schools in due time for talking with the students. After 25 years and counting of having a kidney transplant it is a huge blessing to share my story with others and that different schools on the island can be a part of as well as the rest of the community,” Williams said.
