Light punishment for e-theft

St. Maarten – The Court in First Instance sentenced Erickson Rufus Greene yesterday to a 1-month conditional prison sentence and 30 hours of community service for electricity-theft.

The 39-year-old defendant claimed ignorance: “I knew nothing about this. If I had known I would have filed a complaint myself,” he said.

But prosecutor Dounia Benammar noted that the defendant knew darn well what he did – she demanded a 3-month conditional prison sentence with 2 years of probation and 120 hours of community service.

Judge Tamara Tijhuis agreed with the prosecutor: “You say you knew nothing about this but you told the police that the cable had been hooked up outside of the meter. You knew this was not okay.”

The theft went on between April 1 and May 31 of last year. Given this limited period the judge mitigated the sentence slightly.
