Letters: A banging new road

POSTED: 04/15/12 4:32 PM

The new Middle Region Road is banging but not quite in the way our youth use that expression! The M.R. Road at this moment is definitely “leading” to the “crazy-house”. How so? Well, that’s where all the people who live alongside it will eventually end up after having to endure the loud banging and clanging of the covers of the manholes (sewage and drainage) every time a car drives over them. This is very unnerving at any time of the day, but at 2:00 or 3:00 in the “fore-day morning” the sudden loud noise can be very, very jarring to one’s soul. I dread to think what the road will sound like, once traffic begins to really flow on it again!
“What went wrong here? Was it an oversight? Did someone forget to include “shock-absorbers” in the budget? Was it to cut corners somehow? Or was it to creatively turn the road into a one-of-a-kind musical expression?” If the latter was the case, providing different pitches for each manhole, would have resulted in a more melodious tune!
Don’t get me wrong, I love driving on our new “state-of-the-art, one-of-a-kind” road, but to go from that distinction to the dubious one of “The world’s loudest banging and clanging road” in the Guinness Book of Records, is quite a different “tory”. If it’s all the same with the powers-that-be, we prefer to “pass” on that one, thank you. The human spirit and physical capabilities can adjust to a diverse intensity of noises, but the “million euro question” is: “Should we honest-to-goodness have to, in this case?” …
We respectfully request the authorities concerned to look into this matter and to find a solution for it. We “be” from the hood and everything, but we “ain’t” intend on taking this madness producing noise pollution lying down or sitting up.
