Letter: Self preservation is what St. Maarten/St. Martin needs

Dear Editor,

It’s human nature to want and feel appreciated in our standing in life.

What is self-preservation?
Self-preservation is the sibling of self-care. In the same way that we need to care for ourselves we need self-protection, too. There is no point caring for ourselves if we then don’t protect the very self that we have cared for.

What needs preserving?
So what is there to preserve? We only need look at our life to see/find the answer. We need to protect and maintain all the things that we have achieved in life. And how do we do that? By protecting ourselves, by preserving ourselves, by caring for ourselves.

And protect what? Preserve what? Care for what?
We protect, preserve and care for ourselves by ensuring our values that are the cornerstone of our life, our esteem and thereby our confidence and image, not forgetting our heritage will be preserved. It actually boils down to self-preservation, as it assures us that we are secure in our positions.

People need to promote themselves to create awareness in others of what or who they are, lest the people hold a low opinion of them. The need for self-preservation gives rise to morality. For morality to be truly effective, it cannot be imposed forcibly against the will of any individual or group without their agreement. What we need do is see us as worthy of such attention, worthy of self-preservation. That we are worthy of this ‘self-love’.
Realize that we are doing it for the noblest of reasons, and not for vanity or the like. Realize that there is nothing wrong with this type of self-maintenance, and that we all do it to a certain extent. Just with an active, fulfilling life we should be doing it consciously, doing it regularly, doing it with care and attention, doing it with love and compassion. In so doing, this act (indeed continuing acts) of self-preservation will not only maintain us on the path through life that we lead, but energize us, motivate us, propel us, and give us the momentum to meet life’s many challenges on the road to fulfilling our true and full potential. Without preserving our culture and our way of life our country will only be in a name – St. Maarten/St. Martin – but the people will have nothing of or the characteristics of what and who St. Maarten/St. Martin people of heritage are.

If any person or government has a problem with protecting the heritage, values and culture of the St. Maarten/St. Martin people then they do not have your interest at heart and they are surely not your friend. It is we, the St. Maarten/St. Martin people, that must stand up and defend our position and stop waiting for some person or people from our future generation to do it for us. When we bring our offspring in to this world, it is for us, to clear the path for them in the present and not they (our off spring) to clear the path for us.
The conclusion is for all those who truly love the native people of St. Maarten/St. Martin heritage will join and fight to preserve our values. Elections on French St. Martin will be in a month from now and out of 5 or 6 political parties only one candidate has spoken specifically about the St. Maarten/St. Martin people of heritage and what he intends to do for us. As far as I am concerned the rest of the candidates and political parties are a waste of time and money. They are not for the native people of St. Maarten/St. Martin Heritage.
Naturalizing 400 people every month is the perfect example of not preserving yourself.
God bless St. Maarten/St. Martin and its people.
