Letter: An open letter to Queen Beatrix

POSTED: 11/1/11 12:24 PM

Dear Queen Beatrix,

My name is Juliy He and I was born on St. Maarten on May 28, 1996. After your majesty signed the Royal Decree for my mother, my little brother and I to become Dutch citizens in September of this year the three of us declared our allegiance to the Kingdom of the Netherlands on Friday October 21 at the Westin Hotel. I would like to thank you very much for giving us this favor and hope that our father Huoming can also receive his Dutch citizenship soon.

As your majesty will be with us on St. Maarten in a few days I also would like to ask you a great favor not only for my family and me but, I think, for our whole St. Maarten community, especially the youth. Although I am only 15 years old I have noticed that the feeling of being Dutch does not really live very much among many people on St. Maarten. You don’t hear Dutch spoken on the streets of St. Maarten and not even on the playgrounds of the schools.

In my opinion most people here do not know much about Holland and also that most people in Holland don’t know much about us and probably are not even really interested in us. That is a great pity and I would like to try to do something about that.

I would like to start a youth club, like a discussion and social club for the youth – as I myself am one – for the youth on St. Maarten and also in Holland. I however do not know children in Holland and also don’t know exactly how to go about this. That is why I would like to ask Your Majesty, of course if you agree with this idea, if you would be so nice to help me, or give me the name of someone who could help me realize this idea. I know you will be very busy during your trip on St. Maarten and also when you return to Holland, but I will be very glad if you could take a few minutes to let me know if you could help me with this idea.

I wanted to write this letter to you directly but my godfather advised me to do it in the form of an open letter to you, so that other children can also read it and perhaps will be willing to let me know if they too like the idea and would like to become a member of this club.

My brother Jian Jin says that he would like to be a member of this club.

Thanking you very much for your attention and hoping to receive an answer from you,

I remain,

Sincerely,

Juiy He
