St. Maarten – L’Escargot restaurant-owner Joel Morand was shot in his shoulder during an armed robbery that took place Friday evening around 11.30 p.m. in the alley next to the eatery, near Anand’s Indian restaurant.
Morand and his wife Sonya and two of their friends were in one car when they were accosted by three armed robbers in the Hotel Steeg – commonly known as the L’Escargot Alley.
The victims were robbed of their personal belongings. In an attempt to steal the car, the robbers dragged the female driver out of it, but they did somehow not manage to take the car.
At some point a shot was fired and the bullet hit Morand in one of his shoulders. He was taken to the St. Maarten Medical Center for treatment.
The special robbery Unit and the forensic Department are investigating the case.
The Morand-family is a fixture in St. Maarten’s restaurant business. Morand opened his business more than forty years ago, in January 1972.

While this was a crime against locals the rapid deterioration of safety or the appearance thereof will continue to have an adverse impact on those of us who visited multiple times. e have reduced our visits from three time per yaer to twice a year. Now we are coming down once and going elsewhere. There is not a concerted effort by the government or residents to address this poblem. The result will be less revenue thus less jobs. The die has been cast.
