Laura Dekker returns to end 27,000 mile journey

POSTED: 01/8/12 4:49 PM

St. Maarten – Sixteen year old Dutch sailor Laura Dekker will end her around the world sailing trip here sometime between January 20 and 26. More accurate predictions are expected once Dekker passes the doldrums (an area with no or light wind conditions at the equator).
This is the third time in her life Dekker will arrive here and the second time she’ll be here as part of her quest to become the youngest person to sail around the world. The first time was when she ran away from home after a court ruled she was too young to make a solo sailing journey around the world.

Dekker has already made history on this trip by becoming the youngest person to make a trans-Atlantic crossing. Her 16 day crossing from the Cape Verde Islands is also the fastest on record. That journey ended here and preceded visits to Dominica, Bonaire, the San Blas Island and the Panama Canal where Dekker crossed into the Pacific and headed for Darwin, Australia.
Dekker’s return to St. Maarten is a deviation from her original plans. She’d initially planned to end her journey in Gibraltar after sailing through Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea but she’s decided to alter course to avoid pirates lurking in the Indian Ocean. The amended course included sailing for Port Elisabeth in South Africa before heading to St. Maarten on December 11. As of January 4 Dekker was 220 miles south of the equator and approximately 700 nautical miles east of Brazil or 2, 500 miles away from her final destination.

A small team of people from the St. Maarten Yacht Club, the St. Maarten Marine Trades Association, the St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association and the St. Maarten Tourism Bureau are busy planning a welcome for Dekker when she arrives at the helm of Guppy – a 38 foot Jeanneau Ginfizz ketch. Dekker’s father Dick and her grandparents will also be present to welcome her.
