St. Maarten –Three days after she stepped into the job, the Supervisory Board of Director of the Princess Juliana International Airport Operating Company (PJIAE) has announced that Regina Labega is the new Managing Director of the PJIAE. Her appointment as of July 1 for a period of five years has been the subject of much debate since the Corporate Governance Council advised the government to delay her appointment because of an ongoing criminal investigation. The council had further advised that a Chief Financial Officer and a Chief Operations Officer be appointed next to her.

The statement from the PJIAE’s Supervisory Board does not address that advice and serves only to confirm Labega in her new function and congratulate her.

“Ms. Labega’s appointment to run this large company is a major event that indicates the importance of women making significant strides in our new country St. Maarten,” the Board states in its release.

Labega was appointed from a field of 16 candidates that are from St. Maarten, Curacao and Aruba. While the board believes the others are “excellent and highly qualified” they stated that Labega “excelled at the top in all area of this process.”

Labega replaces Larry Donker who has served as interim Managing Director since former Managing Director drs Eugene Holiday resigned to be the first Governor. Labega brings to the post extensive knowledge of the airport as she sat on the Supervisory Board of the Airport Operating Company for seven years. She also brings extensive knowledge of the island’s tourism industry to the post as she is the former Director of the St. Maarten Tourism Bureau, has chaired the St. Maarten Recovery Committee that was set up in 1999 and has chaired the Leeward Islands Partners – a sub-regional grouping of islands that are served form the Princess Juliana International Airport that was set up to do joint promotion.

“Her interpersonal skills of developing strong relationships, both regionally and internationally, with tourist and aviation experts will be an asset in her new position. The Board of Supervisory Directors looks forward to working very closely with the new managing director. The Board will hold Ms. Labega to the highest standard of achievement in ensuring that the vision of the shareholders of the airport remains a priority,” the release from the Board states.
