Labega’s appointment for St. Maarten airport to be finalized this week

St. Maarten – A formal announcement on the appointment of Regina Labega as the Director of the Princess Juliana International Airport can be expected this week. The Vice Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Directors of the Princess Juliana International Airport Operating Company Gary Master said Friday it’s now up to the Supervisory Board of the Princess Juliana International Airport Holding Company to complete the process.

“The final version of the contract was made and sent earlier this week and the Holding Board now has to inform the shareholder so that the process can be finalized,” Master said.

Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Princess Juliana International Airport Holding Company Joseph Peterson also confirmed that the appointment is nearly finished. The latest news he’d had, up to Friday afternoon, was that the contract still needed to be forwarded. He anticipated receipt of the document on Monday and that the week would not be too far spent, before the appointment is made.

The government, with the support of the boards, is pressing forward with hiring Labega despite an advice from the Corporate Governance Council that the appointment should not be finalized until Labega is no longer under investigation for embezzling money at the St. Maarten Tourism Bureau. Justice Minister Roland Duncan reiterated the government’s position Friday.

“The shareholder has decided to hire the candidate – Labega – and we’ve decided that if she’s convicted she’ll have to step aside, but we don’t want to interrupt her career for what could be nothing. This way, at least she can continue working and considering some of my own challenges with the airport I think it’s important that we get her there as soon as possible,” Duncan said.
