St. Maarten – Homemade machetes, knives, shanks, small packs of compressed marijuana, homemade tattoo machines, 25 cellular phones and cellphone chargers were confiscated during a search of the prison cells at Pointe Blanche.

A massive search of the Point Blanche Prison by members of the Police Corps of St. Maarten (KPSM) in collaboration with the Dutch marines, Customs Department, Immigration and Naturalization Department and VKS. On Wednesday, November 12, at approximately 7:00 a.m., a 40-man-strong team entered the prison and immediately began a general search of the facilities, with the goal of confiscating firearms, weapons, drugs and any other illegal items. The searched lasted until 4:00 p.m. and was done without any resistance from the Point Blanche inmates. Regular searches will be conducted in the future.

This search comes after similar weapons were confiscated roughly a month ago in searches of the prisons following the brutal attack of an inmate with a homemade weapon. In that incident, the inmate was taken to the St. Maarten Medical Center where he was in critical condition. That inmate has since been transferred to a prison in Holland. Following this incident, Minister of Justice Dennis Richardson and prison officials met to discuss additional security measures and to enforce stricter security controls. Richardson also vowed to start an investigation find out how these illegal items had entered the prison, but there has been no word on the results of this investigation as yet.
