St. Maarten – Murder suspect M.K.J. will be arraigned before the Judge of Instruction today before 1 p.m. at the courthouse in Philipsburg. The 28-year-old security guard is so far the only suspect in the brutal murder of Michael and Thelma King last week. The bodies of the victims were released to their families yesterday, the prosecutor’s office stated in a press release issued last night.

The public prosecutor prolonged the first two days of custody according to procedure by 8 days yesterday. Today the Judge of Instruction will check the lawfulness of the arrest and the prolongation of the custody.

The suspect has been interrogated further but as this newspaper reported yesterday, he has opted at the advice of his attorney mr. Brenda Brooks to exercise his right to remain silent until his appearance before the judge of instruction today.

The prosecutor’s office has discussed the preliminary results from the autopsies with family members but will not divulge any details to the media in the interest of the investigation.

Forensic material that was secured on different locations was discussed yesterday afternoon among prosecutors, the forensic department and a representative of the Dutch Forensic Institute NFI. The selected items will undergo further testing at the NFI in the Netherlands.
