Justice Minister Wilsoe lied about Dos Santos intervention

WILLEMSTAD – Justice Minister Elmer Wilsoe lied when he denied to the Antilliaans Dagblad last Saturday that he had asked the American Attorney General Eric Holder to lift the lien on bank accounts of lottery-boss Robbie Dos Santos.

The paper published a copy of the letter dated April 25 that Wilsoe sent to Holder and to Secretary of state Hillary Clinton.

On April 9, the American Department of Justice moved against two Dos Santos companies – Ponsford Overseas Ltd. and Tula Finance Ltd. “pursuant to a third mutual legal assistance request from Curacao.”

“I understand that the request came from the public prosecutor in Curacao,” Wilsoe wrote in the letter. He pointed out that “the competent authority in Curacao to issue a mutual legal assistance request is the Minister of Justice of Curacao or his designee.”

To back up this statement, Wilsoe refers to two different treaties between the United states and the Kingdom of the Netherlands that deal with criminal matters.

Wilsoe states furthermore that the April 4 court ruling ordering that the seizure of Dos Santos’ assets be lifted should be followed.

“By this letter I am formally requesting that the department of Justice withdraw its motion to amend the restraining order (against Ponsford and Tula – ed.). He also asked the justice department to instruct the district court to lift the lien it imposed.

“Furthermore, no further seizure may be put in place concerning these companies’ assets in the United States without prior written authorization of the Minister of Justice,” Wilsoe concludes his letter.

Magali Jacoba, a former Justice Minister of the Netherlands Antilles and now an MP for opposition party PAR, labeled Wilsoe’s actions as “abuse of power to favor a suspect who is also a financial backer of political parties.”

The public prosecutor’s office is investigation allegations of money laundering against dos Santos, who is a brother of Curacao’s finance Minister George Jamaloodin
