Juniors excel on their competition day

St. Maarten – The first three winners of Carnival 2011 were crowned Sunday night during events at Celebration Palace. All the winners are from junior competitions, and all the events had close results.

Zaysha Sinclair beat out three other young girls to be crowned the Jr. Carnival Queen after being selected Miss Amity and ajudged to have the Best Talent and the Best Introduction. Dashannique Pascal was the 2nd Runner-up having been selected Miss Popularity by the audience and winning Best Dance – for the opening segment – and Best Costume. Joliyah Abraham, selected Miss Photogenic, was the second runner-up and Caelann Moore, the third runner-up, won Best Evening Wear.

Reining Jr. Road March King Rickyshio Bertie was able to retain his title with his song Miss My Carnival. The performance was punctuated by flashy dance Micheal Jackson-esque dance moves and was high energy from start to finish. Rumari “The Messenger” Rogers got the first runner-up spot for his tune Wave It, also punctuated with dance moves and back up dancers. He did the song clad in the colors of the national flag – red, white and blue. Chardonnay MArtes, competing for the first time, leaped ahead of the competition and landed as third runner up with his up tempo song “Jump Up.”

The Jr. Calypso title changed hands this year as Denisia “Lil Blossom” Martimbor emerged the winner, with her song Little Sisters, Abstain. The reigning monarch Erissa “Lady Upsetter” Cozier ended in the second runner up position and Rogers got his second first runner up title of the night with a song titled “It’s up to you.”
