Judge Sander van Rijen sworn in at the court

 St. Maarten – The Common Court of Justice installed Sander van Rijen as a new member in a court session in Philipsburg yesterday afternoon. Prime Minister Marcel Gumbs, Justice Minister Dennis Richardson, the President of Parliament, Dr. Lloyd Richardson, members of the Common Court, the prosecutor’s office, the bar association and the police were among those who attended the ceremony.

The 50-year-old Van Rijen was sworn in per September 1 and he is already at work in St. Maarten. The new judge comes from the court in Rotterdam, a beehive with 220 judges. Van Rijen handled business law, insolvency law and litigation in Rotterdam.

The President of the Common Court, Evert-Jan van der Poel, Attorney-General Guus Schram and the dean of the bar association, Remco Stomp addressed the meeting. Van Rijen entertained his audience with the differences he has experienced between St. Maarten and the Netherlands.
