POSTED: 08/18/14 5:05 PM

St. Maarten – Judge Koos van de Ven will leave his post at the court in Philipsburg per October 1 and return to the Netherlands where he will start working for the court in Amsterdam, the Common Court of Justice said in a press release yesterday. Judge Rick Smid will take over Van de Ven’s position for a period of three months, until a definitive replacement has been found per January 1, 2015. The court is currently in the process of recruiting candidates for the vacancy.

Judge Van de Ven was appointed to the court per August 1 of last year. He handled criminal cases. The Common Court of Justice states in its press release that it regrets the judge’s decision to return to the Netherlands, but it respects his choice and wishes him much success in his career in the Netherlands.

Judge Rick Smid is a familiar face at the courthouse in Philipsburg. In 2012, he presided over the colossal Vesuvius-investigation, whereby he sentenced Omar Jones and Carlos Richardson to life in prison. The Appeals Court however, mitigated these sentences to 30 years.
