St. Maarten – St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation President, Stuart Johnson, is urging businesses on the island to follow the lead of TelEm Group in the sponsorship and promotion of the island’s premier Carnival event. Johnson was presented with a cheque on Monday in the amount of $5,000 and boxes of promotional items for the 2011 Carnival celebrations from TelEm Group Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Helma Etnel and Chief Commercial Officer Brian Mingo.

“TelEm has led the charge in sponsoring Carnival and each business should also contribute like TelEm has done and we would like to applaud the company for its efforts for Carnival 2011,” Johnson said.

“Communication and preparation has always been a very important part of Carnival and the funds received today will go towards the promotion and administration of Carnival and the hosting of the various shows still to come,” Johnson added.

“We are already looking forward to 2012 whereby TelEm and SCDF can unify in projecting our Carnival event with even more attention and with even closer cooperation. We will both continue to do our utmost to ensure that St. Maarten’s Carnival celebrations continue in the grand style we are accustomed to having. We are very pleased with the sponsorship and wish to thank Mr. Mingo and the rest of the team for coming through for Carnival. Each business contribution of the same amount would surely put Carnival into the plus and several pluses after,” the SCDF President continued.

For its part, TelEm Group said its sponsorship has been consistent over the years.

“Carnival is one of the most important festivities on the island and for the island and it is an annual event that we fully support,” Etnel said.

She added that beside this year’s donation, TelEm Group has contributed to the development of the Festival Village with an investment of $1.2 million dollars that amounts to more than $60, 000 annually over a 20 year period.

“If you look at this amount over the years it is much more than most companies contribute over the Carnival season and we continue to be there every year as one of the major contributors,” Etnel said.

“TelEm Group intends to have a prominent presence in the Festival Village this year with many promotions and specials for customers,” Mingo also announced.
