Jairo Bloem: “You ask yourself what is this about”

St. Maarten – The attorney representing Royal Resorts and Simpson Bay Resort Management Company Jairo Bloem has offered little comment on Wednesday’s announcement that the Worker’s Insitute for Organized Labor (WIFOL) has filed a petition requesting a hearing on merits.
The union requested the hearing through its attorneys because they think this lengthier process will give a judge more time to consider all of the facts and then order the resort to honor the terms of the Collective Labor Agreement for Line Personnel and Supervisors. The Court in First Instance has handed the union victory twice in this regard during summary proceeding, but those were overturned by the Appeals Court and now the union wants to try again in a setting that includes witnesses.
“I have not seen the petitions, but you ask yourself what is this about? Is it about WIFOL and the status of their lawyers or about the people? What I think is that WIFOL is irked that the resort offered the people employment directly,” Bloem said.
Later he’d add, “The fact is that the people are now employed by Simpson Bay Resort Management Company. There has been no referendum and no union selected and my client does not recognize WIFOL.”
