St. Maarten – President of Voices Nkosazana Illis has invited Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport Silveria Jacobs to the organization’s Emancipation Day celebration in the Emilio Wilson Park. She also gave the minister a brief description of the foundation and its objectives during a courtesy visit on June 19. The minister was honored by the visit and pledged her support to the event.
The celebration on July 1 is themed “You are Greatness, You came from Greatness”. It will highlight history through poetry, music, dance and storytelling. Entrepreneurs will also be giving a recount of their successful business evolution. Activities are also planned for children throughout the day because the event aims to “educate the youth about their ancestral past and enlightening them about their value to society.”
“Voices is determined to eliminate the negativity and violence today amongst the youth,” Illis stated.
The official program will be hosted by ‘Thomas’ from “Under the Sandbox Tree” along with St. Martin’s award winning musical icon, Shadow man, followed by cultural entertainment by St. Martin’s finest young and vibrant entertainers . The organizers of this event hope to make it a fun-filled day with family at its centerfold and where parents can bring their children to the park and relax while enjoying the festivities. Food and drinks will be on sale but it is recommended that visitors bring along a blanket because the event is picnic style. The park will be open from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and entrance is free of charge.
